60th Anniversary Celebration

Kalas 60th Celebration

On a beautiful fall day, Kalas associates, their family members and various special guests gathered at our production facilities to celebrate our milestone anniversary. This event, held on September, 29, 2018, was special not only to commemorate six decades of manufacturing quality wire and cable products, but also because it brought four generations of families together: all of whom have been gainfully employed by an organization who is equally committed to the reinvestment of its local community. In a gesture to show gratitude to the town of Denver, Pennsylvania where our organization was founded, Kalas donated $12,000 to the Denver Memorial Park Project for the expansion of recreational facilities.

Kalas humbly thanks each of the attendees of the 60th anniversary event. It was a great day full of community, generosity and fellowship honoring the past, celebrating the present and looking with hope to a continued bright future for the Kalas organization. We are grateful for all of the time and effort everyone extended to make the day special and would like to extend a big THANK YOU to the staff who donated countless hours preparing and sharing their time to make the event possible for everyone to enjoy!

Celebrating Our Associates – October Honoree

October officially marks our 60th anniversary as a company and this month’s honoree is a perfect choice to highlight. This month we introduce you to Jay Miller! Jay Miller began his career here at Kalas 39 years ago. His history is rich with memories, relationships and more experience than many will ever be able to have in a single job in their life-time.

Jay works today in Kalas’ Plant 2 running our SJT twisting area. This area comprises of three Dynamex twisters, one TEC twister and one high speed twister called the Nextrum. For 39 years Jay has been working these machines and mastering all of their intricacies. The wire twisting machines are complex pieces of equipment requiring much training and focused attention to detail when operating, starting and switching between manufacturing orders. Wires need threaded, placed correctly in various points along the path to twisting and observed with attention to ensure proper production. Even after so many years, Jay still finds it a favorite part of his job to tackle the daily challenges of starting out each new order of twisted cable. Jay has been great as a trainer of new associates that have come through that area for many years and continues to this day when the opportunity presents itself.

As you can imagine, Jay’s history has a lot of memories. It is clear he feels known and valued by his coworkers when he talks, and he is. Jay’s spirit is light and positive to be around. He sees the good things in his work. His telling about how great the temperature feels in the location where his machine is today highlights his bright outlook. 39 years ago, he started operating the SJT twisters at Plant 1 where all machines and operations were under one roof at the time. When Plant 2 opened, Jay’s machines were moved into the middle of the plant where it stays pretty warm at all times. 19 years ago, he got to move to where he is today, operating his machines toward the back of Plant 2 where it’s much cooler. And you can tell he still appreciates that!

After nearly 4 decades with Kalas, he’s seen a lot of change. With machines as large and in depth as he operates, it’s understandable the season of moving his machines was he biggest change he says he has experienced in his 39 years. The move to Plant 2 from Plant 1 took about 2 weeks.

Join with us in thanking Jay for his time here in the Kalas family. Our team is grateful for him and all that he has brought to our company over his 39 years. Thank you Jay for bringing your personality, loyalty, hard work! We are so grateful for your presence in our family over all of these years.

Celebrating 60 Years!

In the fall of 1958, Kalas founding partners Paul Witwer, Walter Cubberley and Floyd Witwer came together in the back room of the Denver Hardware Supply to create a wire and cable manufacturing company on Main Street in Denver, PA. Now, six decades and three generations later, Kalas is proud to have grown to become a +$150M organization with more than five hundred associates and five buildings.

In honor of this special milestone, Kalas will host Associates and their family members on Saturday, September 29 to celebrate this 60th anniversary.  Kalas will also bequest a commemorative contribution to the local community to support the Denver Memorial Park Access for All Project. The Denver Park is a 12 acre space which hosts local events such as the annual Denver Fair and a wide variety of youth programs. It is available to the community free of charge.  Kalas is grateful for the support and resources of the communities in which their associates live & work and to have been able to provide gainful employment to the Denver and Lancaster communities for six decades and counting!

We will share photos and memories after the big day. Check back for more in October!

Celebrating Our Employees – September Honoree

In anticipation of our organization’s 60th anniversary later this fall, we have joyfully celebrated our associates with the longest tenure. This month, we highlight Craig Hershey: Bulk Wire Production Scheduler at our Extrusion facility in Denver, Pennsylvania.

Craig has been with Kalas more than half of our six decades. He began working at Kalas in 1980, 38 years ago. At the time he was hired, everything Kalas did was operated out of what is today Plant 1. Craig worked those first years of his career on 2nd shift as an SJT cable strander operator alongside another long-time Kalas associate, Jay Miller. Being that all operations were out of one building and much smaller than they are today, Craig was also trained on operating battery cable & trailer cable work orders that needed to be finished up from 1st shift. When plant 2 was opened, Kalas got our first CV (Continuous Vulcanization) line and Craig was one of the first associates to ever be trained in operating that piece of equipment.

One of Craig’s favorite memories was from his season of working on our first CV. At that time, if a line was running and it had broken in the middle of the steam tube, they would have to figure out how to run a whole new line all the way to the bottom of the tube. After much trial and error, he and another associate he was working with had the idea of creating a parachute out of filters and using the steam power to shoot it through in the hopes it would make it all the way to the end of the tube and it did! To celebrate, he remembers Kalas founder Paul Witwer buying them a 6-pack of beer.

In 1987 Craig was offered the role of Production Scheduler where he works to this day. In his role, he is responsible for working out the allotment of resources for half of the plant’s each and every job. When work orders come in, Craig assigns and ensures each work center is properly reserved, purchases made and timelines met. With 31 years under his belt, he is an expert on this process and knows more about Kalas capacities, customers’ part number ordering habits and the best use of work center resources. Kalas is extremely grateful for his loyalty, hard work and earned expertise in scheduling our production.

Considering the sheer reliance on computer processes of Craig’s role, it is no wonder the biggest change he shares experiencing over his 38 years was the change from handwritten manual processes to computer-based ones. Currently, orders come in via e-mail or phone call, are entered into an electronic system via part numbers and the needed resources are all technologically associated with the job’s demands in our system. Craig then does his scheduling within the computer software which can instantaneously reserve our work centers and communicate with the purchasing department for resources needed. Before Kalas transitioned to computers, everything was done by hand. Orders came in via phone calls or postal mail. They were then handwritten on tiny cards and no part numbers were used. Those small cards were then attached to a magnetic whiteboard wall with calendar weeks. Someone would then arrange the cards within each week manually judging the capacity of Kalas work centers until a week was “filled up”. Craig would take all of the cards in the determines order, write the details on a small sheet of paper and physically walk those out to the work centers. You can imagine the scale of the transition when Kalas moved to digital! Part numbers were created, every process had to be coded into software, data entered, and associates trained on the new processes. That transition and even a more recent system upgrade were both very large changes Kalas and Craig have seen during our history!

Another favorite season of memories for Craig highlighted the sense of family Craig has experienced at Kalas. Years ago, Kalas formed a Relay for Life team in Denver called the “Kalas Wired Walkers”. They began when the very first Relay for Life event was held at Cocalico and participated for many years following. Each year, the team would hold large fundraisers at a chip & put golf course nearby where associates, families, Kalas vendors, and suppliers would all come together in support of a great cause enjoying food, prizes and a fun morning with family and friends.

The people he currently works with and has worked with over the years would be the favorite part of this longtime career. He truly feels his coworkers are like family and knows that no matter what, every one of them shares a common goal of working toward doing what’s best for each customer at hand. With the loyalty of several associates who also have Kalas histories as long as Craig, he has a deep shared familiarity which contributes to that sense of family – something Kalas is humbled and grateful to have within our walls. Craig values the people he works with and looks back fondly at the shared memories.

Craig is a very warm and highly valued heart at Kalas. In every memory and explanation of Craig’s work, you can sense the satisfaction and positive impression his almost 40 years with Kalas have created. Join us in celebrating Craig and thanking him for being such a quality and long-seasoned member of our family. Thank you for all of your hard work and 38 great years Craig!

Celebrating Our Employees – August Honoree

This month we are excited to celebrate and honor Bob Bingaman for his presence at Kalas. Upon meeting Bob Bingaman, nearly right away you notice his bright spirit and love for his work shining through. Bob currently works out of Plant 2 in Denver, PA on 1st shift as the operator for Trailer Twisted Cable. If you were to visit him, he would excitedly show you around the impressive machines he is skilled in operating, genuinely pointing out all of the captivating aspects of his daily work.

This year, Bob will reach his 41st service anniversary at Kalas. Over his notable history here, he’s had the opportunity to work various roles making him a highly skilled and familiar face around our organization. To name a few, Bob previously worked in engineered cable products as a hand molder then injection molder. He’s worked in shipping, spooling and even worked as a compound mixer before technology evolved. Putting it lightly, Bob’s seen and experienced a lot here. So much so, that if you were to ask him for a favorite memory he’d say he has too many to choose! He’s grateful for the abundance of memories with so many people over his years.

Over Bob’s 41 years a lot has changed. Plants opening, positions changing, and the biggest changes he’d seen including all of the modernization to computers through the years for so many things. Now getting to work out of plant 2, Bob still gets to see change. He has the opportunity to work on the creation of many types of wire and in that he sees enjoyment. Variety, large space to move around and people to work with are all seen as perks for him. We hope you can tell by reading his story that Bob is a man of positivity and skill and we are grateful to call him our own.

Please join us in thanking Bob for his hardwork, loyalty and life he continues to share with us with each passing day!
