Celebrating Our Employees – November Honoree

This month we get to introduce you to another very special associate. Meet Lee Showalter! He is our Bulk Wire Maintenance Manager located out of Kalas’ Plant 2. This past June marked his 35th anniversary here at Kalas. His 3.5 decades willingly learning and operating so many of our machines has made him a resident expert and perfect fit for the role he fulfills today.

Lee’s career began in 1983 as an extruder operator running extruder 8 on 2nd shift in the sole plant Kalas had at the time. When extruder 10 was installed the following year, Lee transitioned to the 3rd shift operator of that line. That would be the first of many extruder operator machine and shift changes for Lee. A few years after that first transition, Lee returned to running extruder 8 on 1st shift, followed by extruder 14 when that machine was installed. When Kalas second plant was built, Lee followed extruder 14 to the new building and worked from there. In the late 90’s he aptly became an “extruder specialist” operating all extrusion lines as needed. In the 90’s he also applied for and landed an assistant supervisor position on 1st shift. In that role he began getting involved in maintenance and started taking classes leading to him into a supervisor position and ultimately to his current position at the bulk wire plants. Lee has seen a lot of change, added buildings, machines, people and shades of growth in our company which many new Kalas family members will only learn about from walking and talking with him.

When you talk to Lee about what he does today, it is visible he is a great fit for exactly what he does. Currently as the Maintenance Manager for our Bulk Wire division he floats around fixing whatever issues arise. He is in charge of keeping machines up to date, ordering needed parts, ensuring buildings are safe, running well, and continuously improving. He has an aptitude and inclination toward figuring out and fixing things. Most noticeable is his desire to lend a helping hand when he sees a need. Being someone who himself rose through the company from machine operator to where he is today, he values “not forgetting where you came from” and helping each and every associate who needs assistance on any line. His background is his gift to having the knowledge and skill he needs to help out.

Over his years he finds memories of Kalas picnics and parties to be some of his favorites. The yearly get-togethers where his coworkers would come with their families to play games and enjoy time outside of the work place made for quality community and memories. Kalas’ recent 60th celebration was a new memory he valued as he got to see several retirees from years past.

Lee really values his job here. He enjoys working with the equipment, the suppliers, and making improvements. The variety of work and energy of being available to attend to whatever rises on the floor which needs worked on are qualities he enjoys. He enjoys keeping in close contact with the maintenance associates and operators who actually know how machines are running on a day to day basis. Kalas has been a great organization for Lee over the years and he finds connection and sees much positive in his history and present here.

Join us in thanking Lee for his commitment, his hard work and his willingness to help! Thank you Lee for being a valued part of our Kalas family for so long! We are grateful for your presence and service.

Three Years of Safety in Kalas Corporate Plant!

Kalas is grateful to celebrate the achievements of our valued associates. This week, our Bulk wire shipping and office teams located at the Kalas Corporate (KC) facility in Denver, PA has reached THREE YEARS without a safety incident. The milestone was celebrated with a team lunch and company gift for each team member. This is an incredible accomplishment for any organization and certainly commendable for a work group with such a dynamic flow of materials.

Kalas is committed to ensuring its associates leave work in the same condition in which they arrive and driving continuous improvement in our safety procedures. We applaud the performance of the “KC” team and thank them for their commitment to creating a safety-rich culture at Kalas!

Celebrating Over 270 Years of Service

Today was a special day. We honored 12 associates with an added total of 270 years of service with Kalas. The loyalty and shared history was amazing. Memories were shared of memories from 40 years past through to today. Memories of when Kalas’ processes were manual, when all operations were out of one plant, when various elders were in leadership and more. President Jack Witwer spoke, individually thanking every service anniversary honoree for their dedicated years of work, noticeably humbled to lead an organization with such unparalleled stories of commitment and hard work.

Today’s luncheon was definitely evidence of Kalas’ associates truly being a family of sorts. Below is a list of the Kalas family members honored today and how long their year of anniversary. Three individuals have been with Kalas for 40 years, one for 35, two for 25, one for 15, one for 10, and three for 5 years. Each and every one contrinutes to making Kalas all that we are. If you know any of these individuals, please pause and thank them for their years of hard work and devotion.

60th Anniversary Celebration

Kalas 60th Celebration

On a beautiful fall day, Kalas associates, their family members and various special guests gathered at our production facilities to celebrate our milestone anniversary. This event, held on September, 29, 2018, was special not only to commemorate six decades of manufacturing quality wire and cable products, but also because it brought four generations of families together: all of whom have been gainfully employed by an organization who is equally committed to the reinvestment of its local community. In a gesture to show gratitude to the town of Denver, Pennsylvania where our organization was founded, Kalas donated $12,000 to the Denver Memorial Park Project for the expansion of recreational facilities.

Kalas humbly thanks each of the attendees of the 60th anniversary event. It was a great day full of community, generosity and fellowship honoring the past, celebrating the present and looking with hope to a continued bright future for the Kalas organization. We are grateful for all of the time and effort everyone extended to make the day special and would like to extend a big THANK YOU to the staff who donated countless hours preparing and sharing their time to make the event possible for everyone to enjoy!

Celebrating Our Associates – October Honoree

October officially marks our 60th anniversary as a company and this month’s honoree is a perfect choice to highlight. This month we introduce you to Jay Miller! Jay Miller began his career here at Kalas 39 years ago. His history is rich with memories, relationships and more experience than many will ever be able to have in a single job in their life-time.

Jay works today in Kalas’ Plant 2 running our SJT twisting area. This area comprises of three Dynamex twisters, one TEC twister and one high speed twister called the Nextrum. For 39 years Jay has been working these machines and mastering all of their intricacies. The wire twisting machines are complex pieces of equipment requiring much training and focused attention to detail when operating, starting and switching between manufacturing orders. Wires need threaded, placed correctly in various points along the path to twisting and observed with attention to ensure proper production. Even after so many years, Jay still finds it a favorite part of his job to tackle the daily challenges of starting out each new order of twisted cable. Jay has been great as a trainer of new associates that have come through that area for many years and continues to this day when the opportunity presents itself.

As you can imagine, Jay’s history has a lot of memories. It is clear he feels known and valued by his coworkers when he talks, and he is. Jay’s spirit is light and positive to be around. He sees the good things in his work. His telling about how great the temperature feels in the location where his machine is today highlights his bright outlook. 39 years ago, he started operating the SJT twisters at Plant 1 where all machines and operations were under one roof at the time. When Plant 2 opened, Jay’s machines were moved into the middle of the plant where it stays pretty warm at all times. 19 years ago, he got to move to where he is today, operating his machines toward the back of Plant 2 where it’s much cooler. And you can tell he still appreciates that!

After nearly 4 decades with Kalas, he’s seen a lot of change. With machines as large and in depth as he operates, it’s understandable the season of moving his machines was he biggest change he says he has experienced in his 39 years. The move to Plant 2 from Plant 1 took about 2 weeks.

Join with us in thanking Jay for his time here in the Kalas family. Our team is grateful for him and all that he has brought to our company over his 39 years. Thank you Jay for bringing your personality, loyalty, hard work! We are so grateful for your presence in our family over all of these years.
